February 15 – "Parinirvana" is known as Nirvana Day in Mahãyãna Buddhism. This day honors the death of Buddha and his attainment of final nirvana." (Always knew Mike Bloomfield was the Blues Buddha!)
The song In Another Country, Mike’s solo leading out of the breakdown in the middle is for me one of the greatest solos of that era, of all time for me. I’ve been listening to it since the day the record was released. . It’s not jaw dropping, it’s otherworldly. You can take Clapton, Hendrix, all the greats from the 60s and set them aside, label them as “gifted”. . then there’s Michael.
My ‘thing’ these days is searching for quality used records. When it comes to Bloomfield, I don’t even care if the record is scratched. Some of his stuff is hard to come by.
John, great article. One of my favourite albums is Mike playing with Woody Herman on Brand New. Classic!
Really enjoyed this, John. What a great selection of quotations by the people in Bloomfield’s life. Reading this made Mike come alive for me.
