Really enjoyed this post. I saw him only one time in San Francisco I believe at the Great American Music Hall but it may have been at the Fillmore. He warmed up for John Lee Hooker. Great show and he had great presence and joy on stage.

Great story. He was one-of-one. I dedicated an entire show to him after he left us. Thanks.

I was fortunate enough to see Mr. Brown several times, in very small clubs. I was honored once to cook dinner for him.

Also played at a defunct blues club here in town called Pop The Gator, 1989 I think. Was crazy, raucous, and brilliant all at the same time.

He played at Lincoln Center Outdoors in the mid 90’s and the plaza was packed with nattily dressed SWING dancers! Great time.

I had the Pleasure to see many Great Concerts with Clarence Gatemouth Brown, including a Big Band Concert in Montreux with a Conducter to lead the Sections. Even once could talk with the Man and I know that he didn’t see himself as a Blues Gitarrist but as Musician who played a lot of Stiles and the Viola too, he was nice to People who called him Blues Musician but opened up when you asked him about Swing, Country, Cajun and Mexican Cumbia.

As the Band Leader for the TV Show The !!! Beat he showed his versatility over a broad Range of American Music Styles. I love the Blues and I am sure Clarence Gatemouth Brown loved the Blues too and could sing and play it very well but I know for sure he never saw himself as a Blues Musician.

One of his Concerts I saw was for the bigger Part a Country meets Jazz Concert. So please USA allow yourself the Insight that Clarence Gatemouth Brown was as much a Country Musician as he was a Swing Musician!
